The Guardians of Martock Church Concert in All Saint's Church Martock

Thursday, 21st June 2018

Dave Martin's Jabbo Five playing New Orleans jazz at 7.30pm. Tickets £9 on the door or £8 from Martock News, Martock Gallery or 01935 822706

This band is named after Jabbo Smith, a strong rival to Louis Armstrong in the late 1920s. The Jabbo Five's repertoire includes his tunes and numerous other favourites from the period.

Jabbo Smith recorded with Duke Ellington in 1927 and his quintet made 20 recordings in 1929, but although regularly working in several bands, he  became obscure till 1978 when his stage show became a hit and he was the darling of music festivals in America and Europe in the 1980s, with numerous videos available on Youtube.

The Jabbo Five came to Martock in 2011 and Dave's City Steam Jazz Band has played here three times. Dave sings & plays cornet, trumpet & valve trombone, with the others on reeds, piano, banjo and sousaphone.

Accompanied children under 16 admitted free.
