Mike Denham (piano) will once again be bringing his seven-piece New Orleans-style jazz band to entertain us with his music and witty observations. The first half of the concert will tell the story of how jazz came to Britain one hundred years ago, with the arrival of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band to top the bill at The Hippodrome Theatre in London and how they stayed on for 21 months at other London venues, to huge adulation and making 17 recordings before returning to New York.

Also arriving in London in 1919 was the Southern Syncopated Orchestra, a black band which included Sidney Bechet in their number. Sidney stayed on when the band returned to the USA and was invited to Buckingham Palace to play for King George V!  His music will also feature.

The second half of the concert will cover ragtime and popular hit tunes from the inter-war years.

Tickets £9 on the door at £8 from 01935 829567 or Martock News & Martock Gallery. Accompanied children under 16 admitted free. Wine & soft drinks available. Ample free parking at The George opposite the Church.
