Our Place Martock

The History of Our Place Martock

Martock Parish Council, on behalf of the Martock Community Partnership, was selected to be part of the Government's Our Place programme, it's aims were to give people more power over local services and budgets in their neighbourhoods, aligning them with all the other resources that were available in the community.

From April 2014, many project workers and volunteers met with local residents, groups, clubs and local and county organisations to discuss what could improve lives and neighbourhoods in Martock. The outcome initially was to be focused on the north east of the community but since then has grown and spread into other parishes nearby.

Although at the time Martock Parish Council had stepped in to maintain some services affected by cuts in the last few years prior to the project beginning, particularly around youth and employment, some of the other services, especially care and support, had been reduced or were only available to a smaller number of people. The Community Partnership was concerned that not all residents had the support that was required and the research for this project was borne out of that.

The key areas of identified need were:

•Self-reliance in individuals and families, including life skills such as first aid, home management, parenting and financial awareness.

•Access to services, not only better knowledge of and referral to existing services, but also physical access including transport and local provision.

•Social isolation, primarily but not always in elderly single person households.

•Employability, particularly for those who are most remote from the job market due to issues such as lack of self-esteem and confidence, illiteracy, digital exclusion, homelessness, benefit dependency and poor work readiness.

•Coordination and more cost-effective integration of services within the community.

The Our Place Martock project then published its final Operational Plan which can be downloaded below. This outlined a new approach to providing and coordinating local services, including what should be done to deliver and demonstrate the benefit of this new approach.

The plan was approved by the Department for Communities and Local Government and you can also download an infographic on the project and the last version of the project brief below.

In 2018 the "Our Place" project became known as Martock Parish Council Community Services Team, as the government funding for the Our Place Project ceased, along with the project. It was recognised by Martock Parish Council that there was still a need for the Our Place Project team, as the work that they do had increased and their support was still needed in the community. In order for the team to continue Martock Parish Council took on the funding and the support of the team. This created a seamless flow to the support and services for those who need and use them allowing the team to continue engaging with the community without interruption to the services they provide.
